Competency models gained popularity in the late seventies and since then, most Fortune 500 companies have adopted job competencies as a part of the organizational structure. Many of the leading companies embraced the idea of competency models with the belief that job competencies, when used appropriately, would give the organization a competitive edge through more productive use of human capital.

Now that competency models are so commonplace in successful organizations what other factors will dictate which companies gain the competitive advantage and why? The existence of a competency model alone does not guarantee successful people development. Utilizing behavioral competencies effectively and linking competency development to training and coaching will gain companies a greater competitive edge than the integration of even the most sophisticated competency model.
